Kōsetsu (降雪, Kōsetsu) is a Mori Yuki-Onna and Shinigami of the Gotei 13, she serves as the Lieutenant of the Seventh Division under Captain Hein Ueda.

Appearance[]

A woman born of the snow, Kōsetsu greatly resembles Humans in appearance though with distinct differences that easily mark her as something different. She is a head taller than the standard of her Human peers, by nearly five inches in fact. Her skin is pale and white, enough so to evoke an image of frailty but also one of beauty. Her hair is also white, though its colouration is of a "purer" shade, making contrast between the two easy, her hair is also incredibly long, reaching as far down as her ankles. It is straight and well kept, with a hair decoration in the shape of a large crescent weaved through it at the back to rest behind her head. A portion of her hair, framing either side of her face, and visibly shorter than the rest, hangs out in front of her, reaching down over chest. Her face is marked by typically soft and feminine features though tinged with the natural maturity that comes with age. Kōsetsu's eyes are naturally rounded but with a somewhat weary, almost tired, angle to them with the lightest hint of skin creasing beneath the eyes, and above them. Her eyes have a bright yellow pigmentation, almost appearing to glow under the gaze of moonlight. Directly below her eyes are a pair of black thin markings that resemble tattoos though the origin for them is unknown, Kōsetsu having stated that she was born with them but that they are not a natural trait for all of her kind. Her nose has a short profile overall though it is balanced out with a rather pointed, almost sharp, tip. Below that, her lips are small as well, with the lower lip seemingly puckering naturally and with the upper lip pushing outward with a slight overbite. Her hands are entirely coated in ice, forming natural gauntlets of a sort with sharpened nails. The ice is highly reflective, giving a clear view of anything that happens to be visible within its view as if it were a mirror, it also makes it exceedingly difficult to see beneath the layer of ice to identify whether or not the iced gauntlets are Kōsetsu's real hands or something else.

Kōsetsu foregoes the typical Shinigami uniform entirely instead favouring a furisode (振袖, Lit. swinging sleeves) style kimono. The kimono is rather plain, the majority of it black in colour with things such as the collar or hem guard being white to match up with the style of a Shihakushō. The obi stands out from the rest of the outfit by being a deep shade of red, a clashing contrast to the black and white of the rest of her ensemble. On top of this, she wears a black shawl that is either rested over her shoulders or hanging behind her, wrapped around her arms, depending on her mood. Lastly her feet are covered by a pair of tabi and zōri. As she prefers to project a pleasant or calming presence to those around her, Kōsetsu rarely carries her Zanpakutō on her actual person outside of combat situations.

Personality[]

Kōsetsu is a maternal figure amongst the Shinigami, such that the Seventh Division, including its Captain, act as if she were their matriarch. She is not an overly talkative person, but instead one who prefers to listen to others prattle along, she often lends an ear to the woes of her fellows and offers up what advice she can when they finish, this has led to her becoming the local advice giver for many, and though not a role she actively seeks out, it isn't one she refuses to take up. She harbours considerable interest in the well being of others, whether they have confided in her or not, such that many discussions she has with others revolve around her proving them for details on their health, goals, and possible issues. She is considered doting by some as she easily gives out emotional affection for those in her care, though others consider her pushy for the same reasons. She has a seemingly mother/son-like relationship with her Captain, making up for his illiteracy by taking care of those tasks for him and generally doting on him as a mother would her child. They share an evening ritual where-by she reads stories to him, though the case is less Johnny desires these stories and more for the sake of Kōsetsu who sees the act as "sharing her world with [him]".

As a Mori Yuki-Onna Kōsetsu possesses a degree of foresight, allowing her to divine events that would occur in the future. She carries an unnerving degree of accuracy in her predictions, particularly those that result in a difficult ending for those present in those visions. She largely views this ability as little more than a curse that she would rather be rid of. For a long time her predictions had never failed, leading Kōsetsu to develop a sense of disillusionment with the prospect of the future, she would huddle up under the pretense that fate is inevitable and that nothing could be changed leading her towards a negative outlook of the world at large and a stance of relative non-action towards other beings. This, and an attempt to stave off her foresight, caused her isolation within the forest that she lived in during her time in the Human World, until such a time that one of her predictions were proven false. Thanks to the efforts of a stubborn Shinigami, Kōsetsu's divined outcome was prevented and a life saved. Following this, Kōsetsu has slowly started to drift away from her negative outlook regarding the future and its inevitability, as she herself takes an active role in trying to prevent the visions she is given from coming true.

She is greatly interested in her own species, as, despite being a Yuki-Onna herself, she knows very little about the race at large and has never actually encountered another one in her lifetime. During her time in the Human World she sought out folklore or otherwise ancient tales that might give her a clue as to her own kind and spent a lot of time in the centres of knowledge when she made her way to Soul Society. As a member of the Kidō Corps she would spend whatever free time she had reading the scant few texts that the organization had regarding the Yuki-Onna. She has time and again, sought access to the Daireishokairō from Central 46, but has been denied each time. She does not actively consider herself a Yuki-Onna, though she would identify as one when asked, largely because, without contact with more of her kind she is unsure how to conduct herself or even what kind of culture exists for others like her. Even so, the prospect of meeting another Yuki-Onna greatly excites Kōsetsu to the point that she has had mock "introduction meetings" with herself in order to properly psyche up for such an event; though she is largely sure that she will simply faint should it occur, or so she muses.

She exhibits some of the typical traits of a Yuki-Onna, though perhaps unaware of it herself, in that she is greatly confident in her skills as a Shinigami, particularly as a practitioner of Kidō, as well as her womanly charms. Though she claims not to be interested in such a thing, she still makes use of her beauty in order to ease others in her presence, a sort of motherly charm that makes her easier to approach and confide in than her otherworldly appearance would perhaps denote. Those that would mock her pride or otherwise belittle her are subject to her subtle wrath, her outward demeanour does not change for these people though her mannerisms and intent clearly do as she easily makes references towards brutally maiming someone with her usual disarming smile and unthreatening tone of voice. Her reaction towards snow is conflicting, though it naturally calms her it also leaves Kōsetsu with a sense of discomfort due to snowfall typically serving as a trigger for her foresight. This feeling of being ill at ease disallows Kōsetsu from perceiving the depths of the link she may share with the snow, whether it be her true nature or another kind of connection.

Though it is possible that her race are naturally confrontational, Kōsetsu is not, preferring a more docile approach to life, she plays against the necessity of conflict even though it is her duty to combat Hollows. She dislikes the act of fighting and will avoid it if she can, but she is no less skilled in the field than one would expect of a being of her rank within the Gotei 13. Her battle strategies rely on manipulation and deception, though she has an affinity for the ice, she is more than likely to use Kidō or Kadō revolving around heat and flame to catch her enemies off guard. She acts as she does when angered in combat, a subtle shift in mannerism covered by her usual motherly tone and outlook though she is less prone to overt threats or displays of aggression in battle unless directly provoked in such a way as to evoke her wrath. Her natural powers over the weather play a part in her deceptions, as does her Zanpakutō both in its mechanisms and the power it grants her, though she has a tendency to use them as a last resort due to their reliance on snow-based phenomena.

During her isolation in the Human World, Kōsetsu spent a great deal of time observing the world around her, collecting tales and folklore through what she saw and heard across the forest she called home and the smattering of villages that rested nearby. This sparked a love in her for the art of storytelling and Kōsetsu can often be found with a book in hand during her free time. The knowledge of these stories are what Kōsetsu considers "her world" and to speak of them with another is to let them into that world, something that she considers an act of deep trust and intimacy, though she admits it may come across as silly to others. Her dislike of the prospects presented by the future also sparked an interest in ancient things, history and items of the past. During her time in the Kidō Corps, she became enraptured with the old art of spell craft known as Kadō which had been used by the Balancers of Souls prior to the development of Kidō. Her favourite food is a dish of Gēng soup that was popular in the village nearest her home, a recipe she knows personally and often prepares for the members of the Seventh Division. Due to being highly sensitive, she is incapable of dealing with even light spicy foods and actively swears off such meals as evil.

History[]

Powers & Abilities[]

Natural Abilities

Enhanced Durability: Residing in Soul Society affords Kōsetsu a spiritual body which is naturally stronger than bodies made of Kishi of those beings that reside in the Human World. On top of that she has went through a great deal of training to physically toughen herself up to a degree that stands in stark contrast to her frail-seeming appearance. Her hands in particular are capable of withstanding a great deal of punishment, more so than the rest of her body, though this fact is attributed to the ice that covers and protects them rather than any conditioning on her part.

Weather Manipulation: Like all Yuki-Onna, Kōsetsu has a natural power to manipulate the weather through the control of water and associated vapours. Kōsetsu possesses a highly acute form of this power that, while initially seeming broad, is actually quite limited. She is capable of summoning an intense blizzard nearly instantly across a great several kilometre radius with Kōsetsu at its centre. The formation is abrupt, appearing with little to no forewarning as if the world had suddenly shifted to her whims. The truth of the matter is that her power works by encasing the blizzard within a gigantic barrier that remains preformed until activated upon which the blizzard then takes over whatever landscape preceded it. The blizzard itself is terrifyingly strong, with a dense fog, strong winds and heavy snowfall all wrapped up in a deathly cold that limits visibility and makes it harder to fight in. The power is a singular facet of the potential that most Yuki-Onna possess, though Kōsetsu is possessed of a unique distinction in that this singular facet is the only thing she can do, she is incapable of more subtle uses of the power or even more overt uses; in this way her ability to control the weather is a switch, it is either on or off with no varying degrees. The strength in the barrier used to activate her power is considered to be on par with an 80-level Kidō, serving as a testament to the control Kōsetsu exerts over her own spiritual power.

Foresight: As a Mori Yuki-Onna, Kōsetsu is capable of predicting the future. For her, these visions are involuntary on her part and cannot be actively conjured, instead they are called up during periods of snow fall, as the snowflakes are seemingly drawn to her and dance around her during their descent to the ground in such a way that she can actually garner information from them in the form of future events. Kōsetsu is imbued with the Sight of the End (光景の端, Kōkei no Hashi) which shows her the "most currently predictable" future that would end someone's life. The future is always in motion and never set in stone until it becomes the past, Kōsetsu is simply presented a preview of the most likely scenario to impact someone but not the only possible scenario. As such, though her visions typically panned out they can be altered or outright denied depending on the actions of others.

Shapeshifting: Kōsetsu is capable of altering her physical appearance at will, the extent to which she can do so is unknown but altering her features to appear entirely Human is a simple feat so she claims. She has been shown to easily manipulate the colour of her hair and skin to great effect and can do so with her eyes as well. She has noted that she is actually incapable of removing the ice that covers her hands in this manner though she cannot pinpoint the cause.

Shinigami Powers & Abilities

Expert Swordsman: Zanjutsu is one of the two melee oriented skills of the Zankensoki, and perhaps the most important of all four of the Shinigami combat forms. As the school covering swordsmanship, it focuses on the use of a Zanpakutō, blending various arts and styles that originated within and without the Shin'ō Academy in order to turn Shinigami into effective combatants. Kōsetsu is a well-versed practitioner of the martial art, as would be expected of her position amongst the Gotei 13. She uses a style that relies on obfuscation of motions, using the large sleeves of her kimono in a dance-like set of moves that hide her blade to prevent her opponent from properly defending against her attacks. It is an intricate and complex style of fighting that leaves her rather open but makes up for it in that her opponents usually have to forego defense for pure offense in order to break up Kōsetsu's attacks. She is skilled enough to go toe-to-toe with near anyone just shy of Captain-level opponents.

  • Bōjutsu (棒術, Staff Technique): The form of Kōsetsu's Zanpakutō while in Shikai is that of a large staff and she is highly proficient in its use, weaving the polearm through intricate motions with great speed and efficiency that makes her difficult to keep up with at times. She is capable of wringing great force from her attacks despite its blunted nature as a tool, dealing heavy damage to the internals of her opponents.

Kidō Expert: One of the four arts of Zankensoki, the primary combat fields of the Shinigami, Kidō is a combat form based on the incanting of spells by utilizing ones own Reiryoku. Primarily Kidō spells fall into either of two categories, Hadō (破道, Way of Destruction) which are spells geared towards causing damage to enemies, or Bakudō (縛道, Way of Binding) which is a more broad field focusing on defense, immobilization or other effects with seals and barriers making up a particular subset of these spells. As a Yuki-Onna the art of spell craft comes easily to Kōsetsu thanks to a natural control over her own spiritual energy. She is skilled enough in the art of Kidō to have been allowed to join the Kidō Corps and ascend its ranks fairly quickly. She is effective with both Hadō and Bakudō, where is capable of utilizing spells as high as Bakudō #73 without incantation and retain their full strength. She has an affinity for ice-based spells that allow her to use them more efficiently than is normal, though she prefers to wield fire-based spells to rail against assumptions of her opposition.

  • Kadō Practitioner: Kōsetsu has taken to the study of the old art of Kadō following her discovery of it during her time in the Kidō Corps. She considers herself very much a beginner in the use of the ancient spell craft, concentrating on water and wind spells at current.

Shunpo Practitioner: The field of Zankensoki that focuses on movement and footwork, Hohō is primarily a support style, providing its users with unnatural speed and reflexes that can make it seem like someone is teleporting from place to place to the untrained eye. It is a physical art that can be trained and improved upon like any other, training and concentration granting its practitioners with greater potential than those of a lower level. The most important skill of Hohō is Shunpo (瞬歩, Flash Steps), so much so that proficiency in Shunpo is used to gauge ones mastery of Hohō. Kōsetsu is not particularly proficient in it use, enough that she can keep up with her opponents on average but it never affords her an advantage and is easily outstripped by those with a focus on it.

High Spiritual Power: Though her power is still considered to in the correct tier for her position, Kōsetsu's spiritual power is markedly lower than her fellow Lieutenants in the Gotei 13. She makes up for her unimpressive spiritual power through an intense degree of control over it, able to exert it in perfect increments to fit the situation, fuelling her attacks and augmenting her capabilities as necessary without wasting anything on excess. As such the case could be made that her power is lower than others because she doesn't need as much as they do. Her spiritual power is an elemental representative of ice, appearing as snow and mist when exerted, though it exhibits the unusual trait of being rather lukewarm more than it is cold.

Zanpakutō

Haishō (灰肖, Ash-like) is Kōsetsu's Zanpakutō which takes the form of a wakizashi. It has a 36cm (14in) blade with a white sheath and hilt which is wrapped in blue silk. The tsuba is a four-pronged star, similar in design to a shuriken with each edge striking out at a diagonal point. There is a small crest on the bottom of the hilt that, when rubbed, causes Kōsetsu's Zanpakutō to disintegrate into snow that promptly dissolves when it makes contact with the ground. A similar marking then appears on her forearm that can be rubbed again to cause her Zanpakutō to re-appear in the form of falling snow that reconstitutes the sword in Kōsetsu's hands. It is an intricate seal that was developed by the Kidō Corps for transportation.

  • Shikai: Its release command is "Body of Ice, Heart of Fire, Fall Together as One" (体氷心火落一緒壱 , Taihyō, Shinko, Raku Isshoten). Kōsetsu holds the hilt of her Zanpakutō against its sheath in front of herself whilst uttering the command, the sheath and sword then proceed to transform into trails of steam and water that flow around Kōsetsu in a criss-crossing pattern several times before coming back to merge together in her hands, when the process is finished the Zanpakutō has taken the form of a large staff. The shaft is longer than Kōsetsu is tall, the majority of its body made of silver-ish metal with a short portion before the top and bottom being a deep shade of blue. The bottom of the staff is made up of two side protruding bars, similar to the crossbars on a spear's head though they are blunt. The top is a large three ringed crest, with each ring being larger the further out they are. At the centre rests a symbol of a flower that appears to float in place, un-attached to any of the rings.
Shikai Special Ability: Haishō has the ability to generate a large snowstorm within its vicinity and then further direct and control the snow as it falls in order to attack an opponent. While indistinguishable from actual snow, the particles have more in common with volcanic ash, causing irritation and burns on contact with an opponent's skin and proving rather toxic if inhaled. Each swing of Haishō is used to direct the path of the falling snow-ash with each motion controlling every minute detail in order to create an ability similar in purpose to Senbonzakura or Haineko.
  • Gara (柄, Haft): Flowing spiritual energy through the crossbars on the bottom of her Zanpakutō allows Kōsetsu to create an invisible blade of Reiryoku with which she can perform thrusting attacks easily capable of piercing through flesh.

Trivia[]
