- "Why do you think that the worlds would flow into one another if not for the existence of the Soul King? If they were meant to exist in that state naturally, there would be no need for a lynchpin. A very fragile equilibrium is managed through the flow of souls, but if the King were to die, true equilibrium would begin to proceed as the worlds flow into one realm. Though such a world would be chaotic to living creatures, the world is indifferent to suffering so long as its precious balance is maintained. Such is the will of the Natural Force."

The Natural Force (自然力, Shizenryoku) is the desire and tendency for the world to seek equilibrium. It is the "will of the Ryūmyaku" that strives to maintain balance in the world between its opposing forces. Though it is called a will, suggesting it has consciousness, the Natural Force possesses no emotions or even thoughts of its own; acting only as a response to events that threaten to overturn the world's balance. The Natural Force is often called the "principles of this world" (世界の原則, Sekai no Gensoku) as it dictates how all things are, should be, and will be.
Overview[]
- "It is said that the world arose from nothingness, and its fate is to return to nothingness, only to once more rise again; endlessly flowing from one state to the next. But it is in the nature of living creatures to resist their natural end. As long as they fight to prevent that end, the Natural Force will forever struggle to regain its balance."
- —Kamui Kawahiru describing the purpose of the Natural Force.
All things in the world are vulnerable to the Natural Force, divine and mortal alike. It is said that the prosperity of creation at the time of Izanagi and Izanami was met with the origin of death, which led to Izanami being burnt to death by the birth of Kagutsuchi. According to Kamui Kawahiru, the Soul King is a sin against the Natural Force, for its existence as a lynchpin keeps the worlds that would naturally flow into one another separate, thus preventing complete equilibrium.
Characteristics[]
Law of Souls[]
The "Law of Souls" (霊の法則, Rei no Hōsoku) is an unconscious compromise between living creatures and the Natural Force. People feared the idea of death and so what was once the past world had been split and separated into different realms. Such an act was a sin against nature, for all things were meant to be as one, yet living creatures were adamant on maintaining this system. In order to maintain an equilibrium while allowing the worlds to remain separate, a traffic of souls flowing from one world to the next was established in order to minimally satisfy the Natural Force. This is how the flow of souls came to be. The original Balancers were Asuras, which fought to protect this balance even if it meant the indiscriminate bloodshed of the otherwise innocent. The descendants of those Balancers would eventually fall under the banner of a different name: Shinigami.
Counterforce[]
The Counter Force (抑止力, Yokushiryoku) is the active behavior of the Natural Force pursuing equilibrium when it has been disrupted in some way, manifesting in the world as various phenomena. It most commonly takes action whenever Mazoku are born into the world. Altana is the personification of the Counterforce, a disembodied entity capable of interaction with those that communicate with the Ryūmyaku. Though the Counterforce often acts using indirect methods, when all else fails, it gives rise to the Asuras to deal with the situation.
Behind the Scenes[]
Shizenryoku (自然力) is a concept seen discussed in the martial arts, usually from a philosophical perspective, although it does have practical applications as well. This article was also inspired by the World as seen in the series, Fate/Stay Night.
